Special Start was founded by Terri O'Neale, a mother of six whose first birth was a traumatic emergency caesarean followed by two homebirth VBACs. Terri is a certified childbirth educator and doula, who came full circle to emotional acceptance when her fourth son was delivered by emergency caesarean as well. In the fifteen years between her first and second caesareans, she was astonished at the changes which had made the procedure a more family centred experience. Out of those experiences has been born a passion and commitment that all women and especially those with caesarean births deserve the Special Start that childbirth educators and doulas provide. We believe that birth should be as enjoyable as possible for all women regardless of the method of birth.
Many people may be unfamiliar with the services provided by independent childbirth educators and doulas. When thinking about childbirth classes most people think about hospital based options, which often focus on the policies and procedures that you can expect when you deliver at their facility. In addition to that valuable information, independent childbirth educators offer small, private classes that focus on issues such as the anatomy & physiology of birth, the roles of nutrition & exercise, and exploring various birth options. Doula is a Greek word meaning "woman servant or caregiver". Today the term doula refers to a trained and experienced woman who offers emotional and practical support to families before, during and after childbirth.
